Purpose built as a railway hotel in 1865, the Keswick Hotel opened its doors for the first time in 1869, swiftly gaining a reputation as the leading hotel of the Lake District. Improved road links and the decline of local mining meant the railway ceased to function in 1972. However, the hotel purchased the old buildings and platform and continued to develop into the popular Lake District venue it is now.
